Pharmacy - Lipator and St. John's Wart

Expert: Eric Brandt - 5/6/2004

Question
Hi,
I have been on Lipator 25mg a day for a year now.  I also take 2 St. John Wart capsules a day.  I heard that these two drugs are not compatable.  I take St. John Wart for feelings of depression.  Can you tell me anything about this or is there an alternative?
Also I heard that Lipator is a bad drug that can damage your liver.  Are there warning signs of this damage so you can stop in time?

Answer
Hi Don,
St. John's wort can decrease the effectiveness of Liptor.
There are other choelsterol lowering drugs. You need to discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor can do a blood test to monitor the effectiveness of Liptor. At the same time a blood test can be done to assess the effect of the drig on the liver. Early detection of an adverse effect on the liver can be done with this blood test.
Thank you for using Allexperts
