Question
How long does the medication Metronidazole stay in your system?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed 500mg Metronidazole tablets, which is a two week prescription.

I understand you are not to take the medication during early pregnancy or during breastfeeding.

If I would deliver my child early, how long would I need to wait until it is safe to breastfeed?

Answer
Hi
Metronidazole is a shortacting drug with a half life of 8 hours. This means that within 48 hours after the last dose your body will be cleared of the drug. After this time it is OK to breast feed your child. I do not expect any complications in your case, and would suggest you take it wothout worry.
Best wishes for a bonny baby
