About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Experience
Registered as a UK pharmacist in 1982 and have worked in a number of hospital and health management posts around the UK. Formerly Chief Pharmacist for a 440 bed general hospital in Cambridgeshire.
Past/Present clients
Previously Sysop on CompuServe UK Professionals forum.

Pharmacy - Mixing Uppers and Downers

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 5/17/2007

Question
Mr. Simmons
I have just been prescribed Dextroamphetamine Sulfate 20mg twice a day(which will be increased to 30mg 2x day soon) , and clonazepam 0.5mg three times a day(which will be increased soon also). Now, I have heard that mixing uppers with downers is not something that is considered safe. If this is correct then a powerful CNS stimulant such as d-amphetamine mixed with a rather potent benzodiazepine sedative like clonazepam would make a rather nasty combo. I've already called the pharmacy and they weren't sure what to tell me.Any of your thoughts or knowledge on the drug combo i discussed would really help ease my mind
Thanks for your time

I'm afraid this is rather out of my sphere of expertise and advice is best sought from your specialist. I assume you have advised them of all the products you are taking, and if so they will have taken this into consideration. If you have not told them, then it is important that you are open and honest.

I'm sorry I cannot advise more, but I hope this helps.
