Question
Dear Sir,  My husband has lots of problems with drainage in is throat and can hardly get a minute's sleep do to this problem.  Is there an over the counter Medication that he could try and get, to get this under control.  Thank you for your time and advice.      Sincerely The Wife

Answer
Hi,Kathryn!
Postnasal drainage can be annoying for both you and your husband! He can try Claritin (loratadine) which is an antihistamine that is over-the-counter. It is available in a generic, which is less expensive and works just as well as the brand name. He should take it at least an hour before bedtime. It will not make him drowsy.
Benadryl is another antihistamine that he could use. However, I don't recommend this medication for people over 65 yrs old and/or on other medications. It is sedating, and can cause confusion in the elderly. If he is not over 65,and is not on any chronic medications, he can try this.
He should contact his doctor if the drainage is colored or he is experiencing sinus pain/headache-this could be a sign of infection. Hope this helps, Mary
