Subject: Nasal drainage

Question
I have had a nasal drip in my nostrils. It has a foul smell and forms a crust at the tip of my nose. It is very tender and sore. I also have a sore throat and terrible cough. This has been going on for about 3 to 4 weeks. My doctor as prescribed Allegra D 12 hour, it worked, but made my cough so bad that I couldn't sleep at night. I've been to the doctor 3 times and we just can't seem to find a solution. Do you have any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi,Wanda!
Did he rule out a sinus infection? If he/she thinks it's viral, you don't need an antibiotic, but if it's been going on that long, I would want a culture done to rule out a bacterial infection. If you are not congested and it's postnasal drip, you may just try a plain antihistamine, which dries up the nasal discharge. Claritin is a non-sedating one which is available in generic form (loratadine). It is taken once a day. Benadryl is a less expensive antihistamine, but I don't recommend this to people over 65 because it is sedating and can cause confusion.  Hope this helps, Mary
