Pharmacy - Nexium/Calcium

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 1/6/2007

Question
Recent news reports mention problem of increased hip fractures in people over 50 who take Nexium an other similar medications
as a long time user should I worry ?
will taking additional calicium help? what can I do?

Answer
Dear Paul,
For people above 50 calcium is considered an important supplement, more so for women. In case of men the need for calcium has not been established even for those taking Nexium. We are not sure if calcium should be given over and above what naturally enters the body with foods like milk. Many of us hold the opionion that a person who is taking normal diet needs no supplements. So long as your diet is normal I do not think you require anything over and above that.
