Pharmacy - Overdose of Amoxicillin.

Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D. - 8/28/2006

Question
Hello,

Pharmacist gave my child (6 months) a powder bottle of an Amoxicillin that contain 250 mg amoxillicin in each 5 ml.  I was giving my son this medication for almost 4 days until one of my friends (pharmacist) noticed that I can't give this to a baby that is less than 18 months. Lady in a pharmacy made a horrible mistake because she should give me the liquid form of this antibiotic that contains only 100 mg amoxillicn in each 5 ml (teaspoon). Can you please tell me what that can cause?

Thank you,

Dorota

Answer
Dear Dorota,

It sounds like, from your description, that you were given a bottle of amoxicillin 250mg/5ml and the pharmacy forgot to add the water prior to dispensing it to you. These types of products are usually mixed upon arrival of the customer since they expire two weeks after mixing. The good news is that amoxicillin has a wide dosing range and most likely, with only four days of receiving a high dose, your baby is fine. I would definitely let your baby's Dr. know just in case. There is a slight chance that an overdose could affect your baby's kidneys so you want to make sure he is okay.

I wish you and your son the best. Take care.

Best Regards,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
