Pharmacy - PCOS and Metformin

Expert: Layla Yeganeh - 7/13/2007

Question
HI, I have been diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor has put me on Metformin, and ortho tricyclen lo.
I have not been feeling better and have gained weight.
My periods are normal now, but I am not loosing weight, what can I do?

Answer
The Metformin, theoretically is supposed to help your body utilize insulin more effectively. As it turns out, a lot of women with Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome, have higher levels of insulin, due to increased circulating free testosterone levels, and lack of progesterone.
This can be caused by estrogen dominance, environmental factors, genes etc.
For weight loss often times the Metformin and a BCP's don't work alone, you are right.

Your best shot at weight loss would be a low carb diet, with ONLY complex carbohydrates, such as the true grains, like wheat berries, etc. high protein. plenty of fruits and vegetables. And a vigorous exercise program 5x a week, that includes lifting weights.

If you would like more information on diet for PCOS I would refer you to this website:

Good luck
