Pharmacy - Paxil (paroxetine) and cold medicine

Expert: Barbara Judge - 10/17/2004

Question
Hi, I am miserable with a cold - but I'm on Paxil (paroxetine). Is there *any* OTC cold medication/decongestant that I can safely take with Paxil?
Thanks.

Answer
As long as Paxil is the only prescription medication that you take there is no reason why you can not take over the counter decongestants and cold medicines. Paxil is not one of the type of antidepressants that over the counter medications are labeled to warn against taking.  If you take other medications, such as those for heart, blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid you should only take over the counter medications if it is OK'd by your doctor.  Be aware that taking antihistamines with Paxil may worsen the drowsiness or cause drowsiness.

Thanks
