About Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.

I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.

Pharmacy - Piroxicam

Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D. - 5/4/2007

Question
I am 18 years old, about 5ft 8in tall 135 lbs am I have been seeing a specialist for arthritis that I have in all of my joints. I have been through dozens of different that did not help at all. I am now starting to take Piroxicam 20 MG capsule MYL substituted for Feledene. I was reading the side affects and it said it could cause rapid or unexplained weight gain. I just want to know why this is possible and if there are any interactions that may contribute to the weight gain? Also I want to know if it is ok that I am taking Whey protein powder everyday? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Nate,

Piroxicam is an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). All NSAID's can potentially cause fluid retention which would lead to weight gain. This undesirable side effect occurs in 1-10% of the population. So, it will more than likely not affect you.

Another tip about Piroxicam is to make sure you take it with food since it can be hard on the stomach.

You should be fine taking the Whey protein powder daily while on the piroxicam as well.

I hope the piroxicam provides you some relief!

Best,
Dr. Tara Kompare,Pharm.D.
