Pharmacy - Prevacid and calcium deficiency in infant
Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D. - 3/28/2007
Question We have a 2 month baby that has been on both Zantac and Prevacid for gastro problems. What is this doing to calcium levels? Other minerals?
Answer Dear Richard,
I understand your concerns. It is hard to see your newborn baby having to take medication that many adults use.
The good news: Your baby should not have any long-term side effects from either medications. Both have been used in infants for a long time and, with proper dosing, should not cause any problems with calcium or other minerals.
Most babies outgrow GERD by the time they turn one-year-old( I know that seems like forever right now!) and do not suffer any long term complications from it.
I wish you and your family lots of health and happiness!
