Question
I have not been able to "stomach" protein drinks, just the smell makes me cough and gag... Now that I have lost 1/2 my
hair, can you tell me If it will grow back, and if so, when?
Sad and growing bald.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I am sorry to hear of your dilemma. I am curious to know if you Dr. has determined whether or not your hair loss is due to a lack of protein in your diet or the result of an autoimmune disorder called alopecia areata.

There are a variety of protein drinks some of which taste wonderful. I recommend sampling about 4 or 5 to see if you find one you like. If not, then you need to make sure you get enough protein from your diet (ie. chicken, eggs, cheese, nuts, etc.). Hair loss due to a lack of protein should go away pretty soon after your protein stores are back in order.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

Warmly,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.

I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.
