Question I read the question sent in by lady about her father who was having symptoms on the Metoprolol and they had changed his Toprol to that prescription due to insurance changes. Ditto for me. I was on Toprol XL 50 mg q.d. and was doing great on it. It never gave me any problems. Then go to pick up my prescription and it was Metoprolol. After 40 days, having heart flutters all the time, chest tightness...almost like going into SVT. I was fine until the Metoprolol. Toprol XL is better for me. What is your opinion on this? Thank you for your time. Joy
Answer Hi Joy,
There should be no problem converting from Toprol XL to metoprolol if an equivalent dosage and the dosing interval is changed. For example Toprol XL 50 mg once daily can be interchanges with metoprolol 25 mg twice daily. We have done this in the past with our equivalent brand of Lopressor SR going from once daily to twice daily dosing with no ill effect to patients.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
