Pharmacy - Toprol XL

Expert: Eric Brandt - 9/7/2007

Question
Toprol XL vs metoprolol tartrate.  Dad has been on TOPROL XL 50mg po qd - for at least 5 years maybe more.  With insurance changes etc, the new dr changed him too metroprolol tartrate 50mg bid daily. It has only been about 8-9 days and he has been mentioning weird feelings in chest??  not pain.  almost flutter feeling at times...  Now when meds were changed they did FULL physical, with ekg etc.  all was good.  Aside from these feelings, alittle clammy at times... Is this med totally different?? Would he not be adjusting to the new med??  Any advice would be great!  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Dawn,
The dose your father received may have been too high. I would think that based on what you told me a substitute dose should be 25 mg twice daily. You need to take your father back to the doctor for a re-evaluation.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
