Pharmacy - acid and ppi

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 5/17/2007

Question
Respected sir,

My wife has IBS/dyspepsia-non ulcer and was suggested PPI like nexium or rabeperazole. My wife, feeling better, stopped. Her point is nexium or any PPI if taken longer period stop production of acid in the system because of secretion of acid by the drug and that some acid is necessary. I need your guidance. Whether continuous use is harmful as contended by her and secondly whether all ppi are similar in response ?

Answer
Hi Harsvadan,
PPIs do block acid secretion, , and their use for long may not be very safe. But their use for months has been found to be safe and treatment of IBS may not require longer therapy. Ofcourse all cases of IBS may not respond to PPI.
