Question Today I was prescribed amoxicillin for my sinus infection. The Dr. told me he prefered a high dose. I picked up the script and I am supposed to take 4 500 mg. pills twice a day. Does that seem excessive? Could this be dangerous? Or is it normal? Thank you.
Answer Hi Lorene,
This is a high dose but not unusual. The usual dose is 500 mg three or four times a day. Giving it in 2 divided doses is acceptible the way your doctor has prescribes. This way the blood level remains high enough to kill the bacteria. You may experience an upset stomach and diarrhea which is common with many antibiotics. I recommend yogurt with live culture to overcome the diarrhea.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
