Question My Dr. prescribed me Bactrim today for a sinus infection. I am in nursing school and was interested in the med, so I looked it up online. It said it should not be prescribed for strep. Do you know why? I only ask b/c a friend of mine has strep and I was a little worried I might get it. is there an adverse reaction between strep and Bactrim that I should know about or does it just not cure it? Thank you!
Answer You're exactly right. The sulfonamides, which include Bactrim, should not be used for the treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections. In an established infection, they will not eradicate the streptococcus and, therefore, will not prevent sequelae such as rheumatic fever.
So if your infection is caused by strep, you'd be better off with another antibiotic.
