Pharmacy - calcium peroxide

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 5/15/2007

Question
What is calcium peroxide?  Is it like hydrogen peroxide?  It is in my toothpaste.  Is it safe during pregnancy?  I heard from my OBGYN that hydrogen peroxide is ok, but not sure what this is.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sue,
Calcium peroxide is CaO2. However I do not know in what context you are asking this question. Hydrogen peroxide is related to water, it carries an extra oxygen per molecule. It is antiseptic agent and used to clean wounds. Many manufacturers claim to put it in toothpaste and such products, but its role is doubtful since the compound is highly unstable. It release oxygen and gets converted to water in a short time.
