Question Hi,
I am a second year Pharmacy student in the UK. I must write an essay on the above question which will go towards my microbiology module. Obviously it is for Pharmacy practice in the UK, however I am interested in others opinoins and experiences as well.
I look forward to hearing a response.
Thanks
Answer Hi Rajiv,
What an excellent question! My opinion is, yes, community pharmacists can play an instrumental role in combating antibacterial resistance.
At the community level, we can educate our patients on the fact that often times the most common causes of illness, especially in the pediatric population, is due to viruses which are not treatable with antibiotics. More recently, there has been a big scare about MRSA which has prompted lots of media coverage alerting patients to the fact that they should take their prescriptions as prescribed and for the entire course of therapy, etc.
I hope this helps you. Best of luck with your studies!
Happy Holidays!!
Best,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
