You are here:  Experts > Health/Fitness > Pharmacology > Pharmacy > comparison of Lipitor and lovastatin (Mevacor)

Topic: Pharmacy

Expert: Eric Brandt
Date: 7/27/2006
Subject: comparison of Lipitor and lovastatin (Mevacor)

Question
Eric --- generally speaking, what dosage of lovastatin would compare to 20mg of Lipitor? the  reason I am asking is that Mevacor is available generically, and there would be substantial savings
if I could switch to the generic; I am currently on Lipitor 20mg

Answer
Hi Barry,
Lovastatin and Lipitor are not exactly interchangeable. Lipitor lowers the bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides.
Lovastatin does not lower triglycrides. If your problem is triglyceride realted then switching is not recommended.
If you were to switch, then I would start with 20 mg lovastatin and`have the lipid ptofile checked at 1 month and at 2 months after the switch.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
