About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Pharmacy - contraceptive pill after misscarriage

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 5/15/2007

Question
Hi,
My Wife had a misscarriage 4 weeks ago. Having misread the instructions she started taking the pill (microgynon 30) again 21 days after the misscarriage. At this point all bleeding had stopped. We used condoms for 7 days to avoid pregnancy. However she is now bleeding slightly (enough to leave marks in her knickers but not as heavy as a period.) Is this just the spotting that is to be expected when starting to take the pill and will her cycle settle down over time?

Thanks

Answer
Bob

I'm sorry for you both.

I suspect the spotting is just an effect from hormone levels returning to normal and will pass. However this is obviously a sensitive area and somewhat outside my sphere of expertise.

My suggestion would be to speak to your GP (or practice nurse) and seek their opinion. My major concern were if any of the miscarried fetus or placenta were to remain, becuase this could cause the symptoms and in such cases the risk of infection would be high. If your wife spikes a temperature then she should seek medical advice (GP or A&E) urgently. Otherwise a chat to the doctor before the end of this week should put minds at rest.

I hope this helps.
