Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 5/16/2007

Question
Dear Sir,

1. Currently, I/male/47 years am on Tenormin 100 Norvasc 10 and Cozaar 100 with good BP control 130/80. My family doctor was telling me about JNC VII guideline about small amount of dirutic like HCTZ. Is it mandatory that even if BP is normal like 130/80, it is beneficial to include small intake of diruitic as a rule ?

2.Is it true that Hydrochlorothiazide whether taken 12.5 or 25 has the same effect. ?

Answer
Hi,
First it is true that a small amount of diuretic helps BP control, this is due to the fact that diuretic controls fluid volume which no other drug does.
It is not true that the effects of 12.5 ad 25 mg of HCT are the same. Ths happens in some people with renal dysfunction but not in persons with normal kidney function.
