QuestionI have tested positive for TB exposure (I live in the U.S.A) and am just starting the INS medication that I will be taking for 6 months. It says in the medication phamplet that there are some foods that we should not take while on this medication because of reactions of chills, headache and fever. They did not, however, list all of the foods that should be avoided. I was just wondering if you might have the complete list of foods to avoid while on this medication. Thank you so much for your time!
AnswerDear Mindy
I have just noticed that you asked several questions as a follow up to your original questions. The problem lies with my computer screen in that it did not display all of your message when I originally checked on the allexperts site. I do apologise for this.
Shellfish are no problem as are the cheeses you mention. It is really only the very strong mousetrap type that can be problematic. I do not know if you are aware of the antidepressants that are similar to/derived from INH or not and this is what is causing you the anxiety. These antidepressants, called MAOIs when taken with the aforementioned foods can cause very serious reactions but the INH used for TB cannot be compared to them. Most people do not have much of a problem and if so it would not normally be serious but I understand your concern, especially with your daughter.
If you want any more information, please post a new question then I will be certain to see it and respond much more promptly.

Dear Mindy
There is no problem with yeast products such as bread but beers are condsidered to be high in Brewer's yeast but not wines.
Here is a list of foods that may cause problems whilst on INH. Note 'the may'. ie youy may not have a bad reaction if you consume these.
Tuna
Sauerkraut
Brewer's yeast tablets
Aged or cured meats, jerky
Aged sharp cheese
