Question
1. Is is true that HBP medicines like atenolol 100 amlodipine 50 taken for long time lose efficacy after several years and that dose and drug need to be adjusted with the passage of time.

2. I purchase antihypertensive like tenormin amlodac ( indian) telma natrilix sr not on monthly base but i purchase the medicines of six months or so. Is it scientific to do so. I do it because if purchased in bulk some rebate is given and quality is maintained. I invariably ensure that the drugs are fresh and there is enough time of expiry i.e if I purchase today, I ensure that the medicines date of manufacture arounf Dec 2006 or so and expiring in 2008. Does the storage affect the quality. Is my habit proper or should I discontinue the practice though I do it for my convenience and because of busy schedule.

Answer
Hi,
I would not agree that a reduction in response to antihypertensive drugs is the norm, it does happen in some cases, but not in other. As I say there is no rule either way.
There is absolutely no harm in making bulk purchase if you take care that the drug will not expire before use. So you can continue buying the drugs in a way that suits you, take care about storing them as required on the label.
