About Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
Expertise
I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.

Pharmacy - side effects

Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D. - 1/18/2007

Question
Can you tell me if any research has ever been done to determine which are the most common side effects of prescription drugs (such as nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, etc.). Thank you very much. Al Brown

Answer
Dear Al,

I do not personally know of any such research but it is a great question!

Many prescription drugs do all list nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, etc. as side effects. The percentage of the likelihood of such side effects is what is really important. For example, ibuprofen(Motrin) does not normally cause drowsiness in most people but it is listed as a side effect and I have (although rarely) talked to patients who experience drowsiness with ibuprofen.

I wish you the best. Take care.

Best,

Dr. Kompare, Pharm.D.
