Pharmacy - ssri's/plavix interactions

Expert: Layla Yeganeh - 7/23/2007

Question
I desperately want to try one of the 'safer' antidepressants.I have been put on plavix and Trental for artery disease and my moods and outlook have become blacker for the past year. I have read that even the ssri's can react badly with anticoagulants. There seems to be nothing that might help me live my life again out from under this cloud. Bupropion prescribed by my Dr does not help at all. What are your thoughts?

Answer
I would stay away from the newer antidepressants, and the tricyclics like Elavil.
Doctor's tend to want to prescribe them, such as lexapro, effexor, cymbalta. Also Bupropion, did nothing for me either.

In my opinion they are no greater than the older ones.

I am biased, my personal favorite is Prozac, or fluoxetine (generic) 4$ al walmart!

I don't see a problem with taking prozac in a small dose, such as 10mg a day. It has the longest half life, so it will be the smoothest.

Also it depends on you. If you don't already, please take a basic multi vitamin I take 1 or two Viactive chocolate chews, a day, and supplement with Calcium (I take Tums, smoothies in coca-cream), this has a profound impact on people with depression. And creates a calming effect.

Take care!
