About Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.

I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular
interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle
a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid
in that population, and disease management issues.
Experience
I entered the world of pharmacy as a technician for approximately six years. I then went on to receive my Doctor of Pharmacy degree and now work for the Federal Government as an outpatient pharmacist.

Question
after taking peroxatine for about 6 years i asked my GP could he change my medication as i felt that they were no longer working he pescribed new drug Efexor i gradually decreased my dosage of first one to half a tablet now today 1 have started Effexor will i have any side effects also i only took my last half of old drug yesterday

Hi Emma,
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by gradually decreasing the paroxetine dose and then starting on the Effexor. As far as side effects go, the most common with Effexor are stomach upset and/or trouble sleeping if taken too close to bedtime. To minimize these I recommend taking it in the morning with food.
