Question My mother takes Synthroid (once q a.m.) and Nexium (a.m. & p.m.). She was told she has to take the Synthroid 4 hours before or after the Nexium. She is getting up at 3 a.m. to take it. Is this correct?
Answer Hi,Ann!
She should NOT have to get up at 3AM to take the Synthroid!
It is important to take the Nexium 1 hour before eating breakfast. Food will inhibit its absorption so that it won't work effectively.
Synthroid also works better on an empty stomach, but she can take this anytime. The important thing is to take it AT THE SAME TIME DAILY to maintain consistant blood levels.
If she gets up at 7A,she can take the Nexium then, eat breakfast an hour later at 8A, then wait an hour or two and take the Synthroid (9 or 10A).It is not necessary to wait 4 hours. Of course, if she is on other medication, that may make a difference. Let me know if she is on anything else. Hope this helps, Mary
