Pharmacy - yeast infection

Expert: Barbara Judge - 4/6/2007

Question
How do I prevent yeast infection caused by antibiotics?  Would using Monistat help?  If it does help when should I start using it?  Should I start before or after my antibiotics?   Thanks

Answer
There is no sure way to prevent yeast infections while taking antibiotics.  Monistat is a treatment for a yeast infection after it begins, not a preventative measure, so I would not recommend using it before you have symptoms.  For some women eating yogurt while on antibiotics or taking acidophilus capsules is a way to help prevent yeast infections.  It may also be beneficial to wear loose fitting clothing, such as skirts, instead of pants or jeans.  If repeated yeast infections are a problem for you I would recommend discussing this with your doctor.

Thanks
