Pharmacy - zyrtec side effects

Expert: Layla Yeganeh - 8/23/2007

Question
Hi Layla,
I'm 44 years old and have been on Zyrtec 10 mg. for atleast 4-5 years for generalized itching. when I miss a day I experience such nausea and dizziness. Its unbelievable. As soon as I take it again it goes away. The only other prescription I take is Prozac which I have been on for 17 years. Have you heard of this side effect when going off zyrtec?

Answer
Hi Christine,

That is interesting, and certainly you are in tune with your body to pick up on such a fine observation.

I have not heard of this side effect before of withdrawal dizziness, yet, one of the two drugs could be working together synergistically to cause this reaction.

I would go to my family doctor and tell them, also get a check up and have your blood sugar levels checked, this can create dizziness and nausea, this sounds hormonal in nature.

The zyrtec withdrawal symptoms would likely go away after several months, but if you continued to feel dizzy, and incautious, further investigation if warranted!

Layla
