Question
Amnesty International’s decision to exclude Nelson
Mandela from its list of Prisoners of Conscience in the wake of his Rivonia address, was it a good idea or not since? amnesty has since reinstated mandela as a POC again

Answer
AI's criteria for including people on that list is entirely arbitrary.  They determine what the qualifications are, then apply them any way they decide.

The criteria clearly state that non-violent means of protest are essential.  Mandela clearly used or advocated the use of violence.  Some might want to split hairs regarding the definition of violence, i.e. whether it includes the destruction of property, or the incidental killing of people while destroying property.

The reinstatement was most likely a public relations move, given Mandela's early advocacy of violence (I would include blowing things up as violent activity).
