Philosophy/meaning of a quotation

Question
Hi Charles,

Kindly let me know what does Mao mean by saying "It is only when there is class struggle that there can be philosophy"?

Thanks.

Answer
This is a quote from Mao Zedong. What he is talking about is the Marxist notion that the intellect works best in praxis, a combination of theory and practice in which ideas are constantly tested against experience and experience is interpreted in the light of ideas. Basically, it says that lived, practical experience is always superior to armchair thinking.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Charlie
