Question Hi Mark. I have been shooting for a while and have recently decided to become a professional wedding photographer. There is so much I need to think about and I am not sure where to start other then ordering business cards and becoming a second shooter just to get my feet wet and build my portfolio.
I was wondering if you could give me any advice on getting started. Is there a book or web site that has a pretty good outline on how and where to get started?
Thank you in advance!
Shellie
Answer Sorry for the delay. I just got your question. Wedding photography is very competitive, and your idea of being a second shooter is good. If you have friends who are getting married, offer to shoot their weddings for free or just follow their photographer and watch him/her.
Make sure your you have the correct lenses and flashes to start. Wide angle to moderate telephoto, a very good flash (preferably the same make as your camera)and a flash bracket.
Hope that helps. Go to the library and get some wedding books. There are also lots of free wedding magazines around. Check out other photographers in your area either by visiting their studios and looking at their books or on-line.
