About Dave Nyce
Expertise
I have used SLR cameras for 30 years and have taught classes on photography at work for my co-workers. I had a darkroom for 20 years, but now am using mostly digital cameras. I can answer questions on equipment and techniques for photography, but am not an expert on specific model numbers of cameras or accessories.

Photography - digital camera features

Question
Hi. I am trying to decide between 2 entry level Nikon SLRs; the D40 and D60. I have learned through research that except for a price difference, they are basically the same camer. The D40 has a higher base ISO (200 vs 100) and faster flash sync speed (1/500 vs 1/200). The D60 is 10 megapixel vs the D40 which is 6 megapixel and the D60 has a feature called Adaptive D Lighting. Finally, I can get a lens package for the D60 which includes a 18-55M VR lens whereas the D40 comes with a non VR 18-55 lens. My question is as follows; for all around amateur photography, would you place more emphasis on having the D40's higher default ISO and faster flash sync speed and no VR lens or having D60's Adaptive D Lighting and the VR lens. The D40 package is $140 less than the D60 so for the same price, I could purchase the D40 and a separate 18-55 VR lens, however, I am not sure that is the right thing to do. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
That's a difficult question.  The main difference is that the D60 has a 10 MP resolution. That will be an advantage if you plan to make any enlarged prints (larger than 8x10). The VR is also a plus.  The only disadvantage of the D60 compared to the D40 is the reduced sensitivity of the sensor (resulting in a slower speed).

So, if you are more interested in the speed (for taking sports shots, etc. or for low light) then go with the D40.  But if you are more interested in portraits, landscape, and travel photos, go with the D60.

Hope this helps!

Dave
