Question
QUESTION: hi there!

im wanting to take my photography to the next level and use exterior flash units.

Im wanting to take pictures both indoors and outside "field" locations.

I visited my local photo shop, who said it would be too expensive, and suggested i research "strobists" in google.

Just wondering what equipment i'd need, especially in terms of lack of mains electric supply in the field?

could you suggest what equipment i should look for in EBAY?...or a company that does a basic beginners kit for what im wanting?

Many Thanks

David

ANSWER: You are not telling me what you are planning to shoot.  As a pro, I shoot with flash outside all the time.  However, I only use an on camera strobe which is fine for my purpose.

Give me more information on what you want to shoot, so I may give you a proper answer.

Mark

QUESTION: im mostly wanting to shoot people outside and inside ....doing "arty" stuff!

any decent DIY alternatives u know too?

Answer
Start with your on camera flash and experiment with exposures, off-camera cords, bouncing and shutter speeds.  Get on off-camera cord for the flash and hold it in different positions so the light hits at odd angles.

Do not invest in expensive equipment until you know what results you are seeking.  If you are shooting with a Nikon or Canon, they both have great small on camera lighting systems with slave units for very little money.

Go to the Nikon and Canon websites and the websites of some of the photo magazines and read about simple on camera systems.

I hope this helps.

Mark
