Question QUESTION: hi there
im in the process of applying for an arts grant funding towards some photographic gear.Im relatively untrained as a photographer, so any input be appreciated!
Ive already purchased a INTERFIt x2 halogen lamps with stands and umbrellas. Also 2 x photogenic monolites. and a nikon camera flash.(get some cheap ebay triggers)
Im thinking of applying for around £2000-3000 british pounds ( or US$4000 - US$ 6000)
Just wondering what equipment i should get, that would give me the most fleixibility and quality for the money?. Im keen to stick to the Nikon brand.
I HAVE TO GIVE A VERY SPECIFIC LIST OF EQUIPMENT I REQUIRE
Basically the intended project is to highlight a cross section of inhabitants of a multi cultural city. So i'll be taking reportage pics with a conceptual edge, staged.. So portraits, people in their homes, and people doing activities out and about. Will ost associate with humans in their environment.
Camera: Nikon d300 or d200?
Lenses: ? NO IDEA!!!! Best for low light?
Battery pack?
anything else? (softboxes? ect ect)
Many Thanks
David
p.s i realise its a bit vague and complicated, but gut instincts would be great!
ANSWER: You are not telling me what type of photography is your interest. Photojournalism, studio, social, etc. This will determine what type of equipment will suit your needs. Either the D200 or D300 will serve you well for any of these purposes. However, if you are interested in shooting big time sport, then the D3 ($4000) would be the camera for you.
Lenses again...what's the need.
If you give me more info maybe I can help. I don't know much about studio shooting as all of my work is on location with minimal gear, but I am a Nikon shooter.

QUESTION: thanks
erm.....the need is for:
im a trained painter, but taking steps into photography with a simialr conecptual approach. Finished photos are destined for exhibitions and books. Like i said, its conecptual slightly staged pictures with local population in their environments. No sports type pics to be undertaken!
Answer I'll give you some suggestions that will suit your needs, although you still were not very specific.
You'll need a wide angle lens: look at the 12-24mm f/4 (Nikon or Tokina)or the new Tokina f/2.8 11-16mm, a lens in the 17 - 55 range f/2.8 (Sigma, Nikon, Tamron or Tokina made them) also you may want a long zoom. Here's where things can get expensive..a f/2.8 80-200mm can be anywhere from $600-1600. The Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 is also about $1000.
If you can get any or all of these with vibration reduction that is even better. Tokina, Sigma and Tamron may use a different term for it.
As I mentioned before, I don't shoot in a studio so I cannot give you good advice on soft box lights etc.
