Photography - remote flash photography with a D200 and SB 800 flash

Expert: Joe Appel - 7/14/2009

Question
Even though I have loved photography all my life, I remain an amateur. I recently bought a Nikon D200 and a SB800 flash.  I saw a photograher using the flash on his camera body and hand holding the SB800 and using both flashes to get a beautiful light.  I have been trying to set my camera and flash up this way and I must be kind of dumb....can't understand the manual well enough.  Could you tell me how to do this...I love that well lighted foreground.
Thank you so much in anticipation of your answer.
Sonja

Answer
Hi Sonja,

Sure, no problem.

Go into the menu of your camera and select the Custom Setting Menu.  Go to E - Bracketing/Flash and select E3 Built-in Flash.

Next, you simply select Commander Mode set whether you want TTL, AA, or M for your off camera flash.  You've got to set up your flash, too.

That's done by pressing and holding the middle of the multi selector button.  Hold it until a menu comes up.  You select the icon with the 2 squiggly lines on the left and the little flash pictures on the right.  Select remote by highlighting it and holding the middle of the multi selector button in.

Take note of the channel and group that the flash indicates that it's in and use those corresponding settings on the camera to control your off-camera flash.

Experiment with different settings and you'll have opened up a whole new world of flash photography.

Joe
