Question I am a new high school photography teacher (ages 16-18). I am having trouble coming up with/finding lessons that I could do that does not require a dark room. My darkroom is small and only half the class fits in at one time so I need to have something for the rest of the class to do. Any suggestions?
Answer Hi,
In photography there is always a balance between theory and practical, too much theory and you lose their concentration. I teach adults but the practice is much the same but nevertheless the theory is very important. I would suggest that you try to construct your lessons around both and spit it so that whilst half your students are in the darkroom the other half deal with composition, exposure etc. Projects based on research of composition I always find interesting. I use examples from some of the masters of art and photography to get students to analyse why certain pictures work and others don't.
They can also examine the pros and cons of digital and conventional photography, how certain techniques used in film photography have been transferred to digital and how much closer to art photography has become, and if the changes are good or bad.
