Photography - photo editing

Question
Hi Lawrence,

Not sure if you can help me here! I'm 19 years old and am in the process of applying for uni courses.

My IDEAL job, would be to edit photos, most likely touch ups for magazines or something, but just anything really, would be great.

What i was wondering, is, am i most likely going to have to study a photography course and become a photographer in order to be able to get a job like this? I'm unaware of how normal it is for photographers these days to edit their own work. Do you know of any university courses, say, a graphic design course, that could give me experience in this area, and lead me to a job where it'd be unnecessary for me to supply the photos myself?

Any information you have would be great :]

Thanks for your time.

-Mykelle

Answer
Hello there,

I'm not sure what part of the world you're in, and find it hard to name particular courses which you could access.

You've mentioned Photography and Graphic Design which are seperate but related subjects.Sometimes people develop skills in both areas or go from one to the other eg Robert Mapplethorpe, a famous American Photographer who initially trained in Graphic design then went on to a career in Photography. That happened in the days before digital imaging.

To answer your question, I think if you talk to some of the magazine people, the designers and layout artists, you'll find they didn't learn a lot of Photography. They have probably done courses in things like Photoshop and Adobe In-Design. If you can get any hands-on experience with a Publication even if only part-time, it will give you some insights on future directions.

Most Photographers do their own editing unless they are busy enough to need to hire someone. In many cases, the editing is for the presentation of their work. This is different to the editing where an image has to fit the space in a publication, as these are different considerations to purely visual ones. For more info on this, look at my website http://lawrencemarshall34.googlepages.com/tipsonbetterphotography. The Tips on Composition will help you understand how visual awareness is a study on its own, seperate from computer and Graphic design skills.
If you are in Australia ( as I am ) you might look at some of the Tafe short courses as an Introduction or a good Institution like Swinburne College in Melbourne.

Hope this is of help,

Lawrence Marshall
