Question
Hi, I am a college student very new a photography (I actually have no experience whatsoever), but it has always interested me. I was wondering, can you go anywhere if you get a degree in photography?  I mean is it realistic to say, I want to make it big in photography?  Also, what kind of camera would you choose for a beginner to use?  I do not know if i will have access to a darkroom, I live on my college campus, so I probably could in the art room, but I'm not certain.  Okay, thank you.  -Whitney

Answer
Photography is like anything else out there, lawyer, doctor, etc.  How 'big' you make is going to depend on how much inheirent talent you have and how hard you are willing to work.
I'm assuming that by 'make it big' you mean the likes of Annie Leibowitz, Cartier-Bresson...that sort of thing.  They all have one thing in common...an individual and unique style that is recongnizably thiers.  Cartier-Bresson for example...the father of modern photojounalism, the co-founder of Magnum Agencies <http://www.magnumphotos.com/c/Home_MAG.aspx> and one of the major Life Magazine Photographers was, as I've said the father of modern photojournalism and made a very good life out of it.  Since then there have been literally thousands of photographers who have copied his style and work for small city newspapers ekking out a lowly salary.
I don't want to sound harsh here, and I may be mis-reading the intent of your question ('I want to make it big in photography'), but being creative is not something you learn, you either have it or you don't...and if you don't you can make a reasonable living doing good basic photography (weddings, portraits, etc).  But either way, it isn't as easy as it looks and, again like anything will require hard work and perseverence to make it 'big'.
If you realize this and wish to reword you question I would be happy to give you some hints and tips to become successful in photography...if this is the case please send me another question.
