About Dave Nyce
Expertise
I have used SLR cameras for 30 years and have taught classes on photography at work for my co-workers. I had a darkroom for 20 years, but now am using mostly digital cameras. I can answer questions on equipment and techniques for photography, but am not an expert on specific model numbers of cameras or accessories.

Question
Hello Dave, Myself and few associates have formed a business group that visits schools around the UK at the end of each year to take photos of all the pupils who happen to be leaving, these photos are then compiled together to produce a leavers book for the pupils to buy.

This is only an idea at present, what we wondered though is what type of camera to purchase ? i've been told a digital SLR is a must and I wanted a few opinions which is why this question has been posted to you.

Please reply, Kind regards, Stuart

Answer
A digital camera is a must today, because you can make any needed adjustments before printing, and you can also keep deleting bad photos and take new ones after reviewing the image right after taking it.

An SLR is a way to view the image in the eyepiece the same as it will be exposed to the film of a normal film type camera. On a digital camera, I don't think it matters as much that it is an SLR, because you can use the image screen when composing your shot. If you prefer to use only the viewfinder, then an SLR will be helpful. You should get a camera with 5 megapixel capability, because the lower resolution ones will be out of date soon.

If you use a camera with removables lenses, you can get a greater range of performance, but it may not be totally necessary if your camera has a wide optical zoom range (at least 4 to one).

Hope this helps!

Dave
