AboutMalcolm Dickinson Expertise Questions about 35mm and medium format cameras, questions about developing B&W film; and questions about making B&W prints.
Experience I've been an avid photographer since 1981 and took a lot of B&W photography classes in college. I've done a lot of medium format work and have always developed & printed my own pictures.
Publications I had several photos published in college magazines and one photograph included in a juried exhibition.
I have a Leica, I believe circa 1950, and want to buy a silver lens cap for it. Can you tell what model it is by its serial number? No. 518040.
I bought the camera from an avid collector in the early 90's for $400 (with leather case). Do old Leica's hold their value, or are they decreasing due to the digital age?
thank you very much.
Answer Hi Cindy,
I can't tell what model it is, but I know if you call the people at Stan Tamarkin Camera, they will be able to help you. I have used them for my Leica needs. They are very knowledgeable.
Usually the model number is engraved on the front of the camera. If you are lucky, it will be an M3 - the real collector's item cadillac of rangefinder cameras!
The good news is these cameras just keep increasing in value, year after year. You may be surprised how much yours is worth. You can check their web site for sample prices of used Leica equipment.
Tamarkin will be able to sell you a replacement lens cap, I'm sure.
