About Martin Seymour
Expertise
I have worked in most aspects of still photography, using film and the wet process for 50 years. Employing all film formats 35mm to 8x10 sizes, I went over partly to digital cameras in 02, also PC editing of pictures. I still find film work more demanding , as you have to get it right at the start with no auto settings on the camera to cover my mistakes. Pictorial work is my personal interest. Its is not a good idea for me to suggest a particular make of equipment just a type, and its uses.

Question
Hello,
In order for me to produce a sharp image when I hand hold a camera with 100 mm lens, what shutter speed would you recommend?

Last question; When using an SLR what is the function of the automatic diaphragm? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Regards-Skyler

Answer
Hi Skyler
Hand held camera this all depends on you every one has different abilities 250 might be a good start or even higher.

When you have a meter fitted the Autodiaphram is connected to the auto meter the meter reads the light available and adjusts the size of the hole that the light passes through. inside the lens body.
even without a meter when you look through the lens the diaphragm is wide open so that you get a nice bright view ,
in the view finder. when you press the button to make exposure the diaphragm closes down to the pre selected aperture , thus making the correct exposure.
