About Steve Pearson
Expertise
Try me for 35mm or darkroom issues. I am a professional photographer in Australia. I work solely in 35mm digital format, after 35 years of colour and monochrome film in many formats. I have darkroom experience and for many years belonged to my local camera club. I conduct photography workshops around the state on any and most subjects relating to photography and often judge photography exhibitions and competitions.

Experience
I hold a Diploma of Applied Science in Forensic Investigation, with part of my studies involving photography. I spend most days with a camera and am into digital photography in a big way. I was given my first camera in 1965 and have not been without one since. I spent nearly 20 years as a forensic investigator with my state Police Force, and since retiring a couple of years ago have concentrated on commercial photography - especially weddings.

Question
Hi,
I am looking for a digital camera that takes good quality photos when zoomed in and also as decently good photos as possible in the night and that has a built in anti shake and red eye reduction. Anything you suggest? I've looked at Pentax Optio A20 Digital Camera as it seems to be quite good but for the same price I can get Hitachi DS-A651 10MP Digital Camera which is currently on sale, I can't tell which one would be better to take and I also looked at SAMSUNG D103 Digital Camera 733683 which is extra cheap so do you know anything about these cameras? They are all 10 MP so would create a good quality photos but what else is important to look at? I am clueless when it comes to digital cameras and have had 2 and haven't been satisfied with any of them. How important is make and which ones are the best? It'd help a lot to hear from you.
Thanks!
Snjezana

Answer
Hi. I'm sorry but I'm not at all familiar with the cameras you have mentioned. It is important to speak with a salesman, but not just any salesman. Don't go to a department store where some snotty-nosed kid just out of high school will sell you anything from a wheelbarrow to a toothpick. Go to a larger camera store and speak with a photographer who can show you the best features of any camera in stock, and can also competently demonstrate the camera to you. Once you have decided on which one to buy, THEN start looking around for the best price. If you find a camera cheaper somewhere other than the one you looked at in the camera store - go back and ask them if they will match the price. At least give them the opportunity to sell you something after all the work they've done with you. Good luck with it all.
