Question How do I obtain a copyright for a photo before entering it in a contest?
Answer Warren,
You already own the copyright by possessing the original negative or digital file. You can apply the US Govt copyright office, but that's a pain and is normally done for large collections. Some contests ask you to sign all rights over to them as part of the entry process, it's not unusual but....
As a freelancer, I own all copyrights to my photos. At times, I will either sell them or give them the rights. There is an unspoken, honor among thieves, with regard to rights.
The internet is a whole different game. There seem to be no rules there and very hard to enforce.
