Question
QUESTION: I am starting to get back into portrait shooting. If I buy umbrella lighting (blk/wht only) should I buy strobe or reg. lighting?

ANSWER: A small strobe will be cheaper and more versatile.  You could buy a regular on flash strobe then mount it on the umbrella stand and trigger it remotely.  You, then, could use the strobe for everyday shooting.

Regular lighting will be more consistent, more expensive and less portable.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Actually I'd rather use segular lighting if this is better. It would be permently down my basement so there would be no need to move it. So, if I'm going to use reg. lighting with umbrellas, what type of lite would be best? I am strickly using blk./wht. film. Is flouresent good? How much wattage?...etc.?...Thanks

Answer
Are you talking about overhead lighting or bounce umbrella?  You need special photo lights to use with an umbrella, I assume you are talking about flourescents as the overheads which have nothing to do with your shooting lights.

It seems you need to get a more info about what you are seeking. I do not shoot in a studio, I am strictly location and only use umbrella lighting with a strobe.  Go to your local photo shop, an on-line forum or your library for more detailed info.  Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Digital is great for b/w photography!

Mark
