Question -
What is a typical day in the life of a photographer?
Answer -
Why do you want to know this?

Mark

I have a school project to do and i need to know information about being a professional photographer.

Answer
This is a tough one.  As a freelancer, there are some days I will answer a few phone calls and e-mails, then ride my bike and run errands.  Other days, I would get-up  check e-mail, then depending on what assignments I have organize my day.  Today, all I had to do was e-mail one client and call two.  Tomorrow, I have a shoot at a elementary school where the mayor and members of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities will be doing readings about Thanksgiving.  That should end about 11 am.  I will then go to the post office to see if anyone has sent my large amounts of money from previous shoots. I will then probably go food shopping, go home, take a bike ride to the bank and deposit those vast amounts of cash that were mailed to me (otherwise, just take a ride in the mountains/desert (I live in Phoenix).  At about 5 pm I will leave to shoot a reception for the opening night of a dinner theatre (35 miles one way) where I have a camera in one hand and a drink (preferably wine) in the other hand. If I don't decide to stay and see the show, I will go home and download the photos, edit them and burn them to the clients' CDs and, of course, back them up on the hard drive. I save them accroding to the client (each client has their own folder).  I will make nice labels for the CDs.

If time permits, I will prepare a bill for the clients.  Sometimes the editing takes lots of hours depending how much I shoot with each assignment.  But these two I don't think will have copious amounts of images.

Everyday is different.  Some assignments can last for a few days.  If I am shooting a convention, I may be at the hotel for three days..6 hours a day; a wedding could be anywhere from 3-7 hours. Other shoots can last an hour or less (1.5 hours in my minimum charge).

The amount a photographer charges is contingent on the market and what they deliver to their clients.  A wedding could be anywhere from $1000-$10,000.

Let me know if you need more information - good luck.
