Question
Hi,
I am looking to turn a picture into the "pop art" style from Andy Warhol.  Any suggestions or software, free or purchase to do this?  Thanks.

Answer
There are many ways to go about doing this. But a quick-fix filter or tip won't do it justice. Let your artistic talents flow. Photoshop is merely a tool. Sketch out what you want on paper, then translate it to Photoshop and experiment until you get what you want.

Nevertheless, the best tutorial I've seen for pop-art style manipulation was on pp. 44-45 of the July/August 2004 edition of Photoshop User magazine. Try to get a copy used on ebay. The back issue is sold out at the publisher. For some reason, they don't let you download all the back issues (even if you're a member) and, unfortunately, that issue is one of them!

It goes roughly like this (do everything in separate layers and adjustment layers):

1. Make your color photo into a very high-contrast image (like a bad photocopy).

2. Duplicate the background layer and burn in the details. Dodge back other areas to your liking.

3. Experiment with  the Halftone Pattern filter.
