Question
Hi, could you please tell me the best way to shoot fireworks? I am a professional photographer, I have a Nikon D200 and any lens I need, I've just never shot fireworks and want to do a great job. I prefer to take shots that are somewhat avant-garde, not something easily digestible or average. Thanks so much for your help, have a great day! Jade

Answer
First, of course, a tripod is needed.  Know where the burst are and how far they spread to determine the lens.  Will a memorial or some other recognizable structure be in the photo that you may want to include?  Or do want the bursts isolated?

Use aperture priority and a low ISO.  You want to see those fireworks trails. Since most displays last 15-20 minutes, there is plenty of time to tweak as you shoot.  Probably an 1/8 or 1/4 second will be your shutter speed.

Good luck..

Mark
