About Bob Todrick
Expertise
I can answer questions on most areas of photography. Though fine-art nudes is my main focus, I can, as well answer most questions dealing with darkroom processes (including many alternative processes). My expertise does not include digital.

Experience
I have photographed since 1975. Among my clients have been a number of major retail department stores (the Bay, Eatons). I photographed for Canada's premier motorsports magazine for a number of years, and have done much portraiture and wedding photography.
In 1990 I gave up shooting professionally to concentrate on my fine-art work and have had numerous group and one person shows since.

Organizations
Co-founder of the Group of Several.

Publications
Numerous newspaper and print ads.
GRAPHIS photo annual.

Question
Hi, my name is Kyla, and I am a senior English major.  Part of my Honors thesis is to write the first half of a novel (which will hopefully be published).  My main character is an aspiring photographer.  She delves mostly in monochrome and has a darkroom in her basement.  I like photography but don't have much experience with it, and I want to add depth and authenticity to scenes dealing with cameras, filters, dark room procedures, dodging/burning, and more experimental developing procedures.   I am looking for an experienced photographer to answer questions as well as possibly skimming over certain scenes to make sure my character is a ‘real' photographer and comes across like she knows her stuff, even if I don't.  J The only question I have right at this moment is how to choose my character's camera.  Right now, she's had the same camera since the mid nineties.  It could be newer if needed.  Would an older camera work just as well as the newer ones?  Also, what would be a good camera for her to have, solid but not top of the line, as she doesn't have a lot of money?  Thanks, Kyla

Answer
Sounds like an interesting project.  I'd be interested in helping if I get a signed copy of the book when published ;-)
What kind of camera depends on what kind of photography your character is interested in, and whether she is going to partake in the 'digital revolution'.
For example she could be the aspiring 'art' photographer on a macaroni budget.  Probably has an old K1000 (Pentax) and a couple of lenses, yet takes amazing photographs showing depth and compassion.  (actually lots of these people around).
She could be someone with a social conscience who wants to document a relevant social problem....runs around with an old Leica M3 (like Cartier-Bresson or Robert Capa, who took the famous 'Death of a Loyalist Soldier') and chain smokes.
Or she could be an up and coming photojournalist, saving her money for a new mega buck digital SLR.
As you can see you've quite a range of equipment to consider.
